The proud record Peterborough United will defend against arch rivals Cambridge United on Saturday

History strongly favours Posh as they prepare for their first Football League game against noisy neighbours Cambridge United for 21 years at London Road on Saturday.

Posh have hosted the ‘U’s’ at London Road 15 times in Football League matches and have won nine and lost just three of them.

A 68th minute header from Gary MacDonald settled this Division Two game in Posh’s favour in front of 8,656 fans. Cambridge went on to finish bottom of the table and wouldn’t play at Posh’s level again for over two decades.

March 2001

Posh 4, Cambridge 1

Three goals in the final 11 minutes from current BBC Cambs pundit Francis Green, club legend David Farrell and Jason Lee blew a tight Division Two game wide open in front of 10,068 fans. Richard Forsyth had opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first-half with Cambridge equalising just a minute later. This is the biggest Poshwin in this fixture.

November 1998

Posh 2, Cambridge 1

Cambridge were flying high in second in Division Three, 13 places above Barry Fry’s Posh, when this game took place. Prolific Trevor Benjamin, a future Posh player, gave the visitors a first-half lead, but goals from Steve Castle and Leon McKenzie turned the game on its head before the break. A Tuesday crowd of 10,168 watched this match.

December 1997

Posh 1, Cambridge 0.

It was Posh flying high in second place in Division Three ahead of this fixture, but it took until the 85th minute for Jimmy Quinn to find the winning goal in front of a 10,791 crowd.

Six of the nine Posh wins in this fixture have been by one-goal margins.

Under 5,000 fans saw Keith Oakes and Richie Barker score in a 2-0 Division Four win in 1972.

The most important matches betwen Posh and Cambridge arrived in the 1977-78 season when both teams were pushing for promotion to the second tier of English football for the first time in their history.

Tony Cliss and Gary Sargent scored the goals in a 2-0 Posh win at London Road in front of a disappointing gate of 7,308, but Cambridge won the New Year re-match 1-0 and they eventually went up in second place, while Posh missed out on promotion on goal difference in fourth.

Legendary figure Chris Turner played for Posh that season and later went on to play and manage Cambridge, famously leading them to a 5-1 win at London Road in January, 1989.

One Dion Dublin scored a hat-trick for Cambridge, while Posh forward Dave Swindlehurst scored at both ends in the first 10 minutes!

Cambridge also won the first meeting in April 1971, 3-2 (crowd 5,067), but haven’t won at London Road since April 1990 when Noel Luke scored a Posh consolation in a 2-1 reverse in front of 9,257 fans.
